Introduction

Metalizing is the premier, low life-cycle-cost (LCC) protective coating for steel structures. It is a more effective means of protecting steel than painting and re-painting and is certain to reduce bridge maintenance expense over the long-term.  more...

Paint's Perpetual Problems

In this section we will periodically post news from the world of paint! We hope to interject a little humor as well ... at the expense of paint, of course.  more...

  • New Jersey’s 2001 Metalizing Projects - The New Jersey Department of Transportation has metalized three structures this year that are part of the Route 33 Freeway Project. Additional metalizing work is scheduled for this year.   more...

  • Maintenance Interval - Recently, several organizations have contacted us regarding the use of un-sealed-sprayed-metal coatings and the use of paint over sprayed-metal coatings. So, we refer to a past issue of the Newsletter “Metalizing For Corrosion Control”.  more...

  • List of Ohio's Metalized Bridges - The state of Ohio began its metallizing program in 1985. The first metalizing demonstration was at Delaware Ohio in January 1984. The temperature during the demonstration was 5 degrees Fahrenheit.  more...

  • Achieving Long Term Coating Performance - Recently, an article, “Achieving Long Term Coating Performance”, appeared in the September 2000 issue of the newsletter Metalizing for Corrosion Control. In their article Bob Kogler and Carl Highsmith describe a twenty-year evolution of a life-cycle-cost (LCC) philosophy for bridge coating materials and processes. Government regulation and industry and technical factors converged during this period to bring metalizing out of obscurity.   more...

  • Snohomish County (Washington) Bridge - This tied arch bridge crosses the Skykomish River at the Town of Index, Washington. It is the first steel bridge built by the county in a number of years and is the first ever metalized.  more...

  • Definition of Metalizing Sealer - Metalized aluminum and zinc coatings corrode naturally. The corrosion products that form seal any porosity in the sprayed-metal coating. This natural sealing, by the formation of the corrosion products, consumes the metal coating. A paint sealer may be used to artificially seal the pores in the metal coating.   more...

  • Illinois Metalizes McNaughton Orthotropic Deck - Modjeski and Masters reports on the McNaughton Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

Modjeski & Masters investigated and proposed a replacement overlay system which includes a 10 – 12 mil coating of arc sprayed zinc.   more...

  • Measuring Sealers for Metallised Coatings - “Measuring Sealers for Metallised Coatings” is the title of the February, 2001 "Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings" Problem Solving Forum (pp 17-20). Three authors reply to the question: “How do you measure the DFT or WFT of a film-forming sealer applied to a metallised coating (e.g., flame-sprayed zinc)?" This MUST be read by everyone in the metalizing business!   more...
